Dutching Calculator

Work out the stakes needed for an equal return across selections in the same market.

Set a cash stake on one selection. The other stakes are calculated from its potential return.

Enter an amount and decimal odds for each selection.

How to Use the Dutching Calculator

The Dutching Calculator helps you distribute your betting stakes across two or more selections to achieve approximately the same return whichever of your chosen selections wins.

Dutching is commonly used in horse racing, football and other sports where you want to back several possible outcomes rather than relying on a single selection.

The calculator supports both Standard Dutching and Free Bet Dutching, automatically calculating the stakes and potential returns for each selection.

Standard Dutching

Standard Dutching involves dividing your total stake between several selections at different odds.

The aim is to distribute your stakes so that each winning selection produces approximately the same profit or loss.

Step 1: Select Standard Dutching

Choose the Standard Dutching tab.

This is the appropriate option when you are using your own money to back several selections.

Step 2: Enter the Betting Odds

Enter the decimal odds for each selection you want to include.

For example, suppose you want to back three horses in the same race:

  • Horse A: 3.00
  • Horse B: 5.00
  • Horse C: 8.00

The calculator uses these odds to determine how your total stake should be distributed.

Step 3: Enter Your Total Stake

Enter the total amount you want to invest across all your selections.

For example, if you enter £100, the calculator distributes that £100 between the three horses according to their respective odds.

Selections at shorter odds generally require larger stakes, while selections at longer odds require smaller stakes.

Step 4: Examine the Results

The calculator automatically calculates the appropriate stake for each selection.

The results show the stake allocation and potential financial outcome of your bets.

For example, with a total stake of £100:

SelectionOddsStake
Horse A3.00£52.63
Horse B5.00£31.58
Horse C8.00£15.79
Total£100.00

In this example, each winning selection produces a return of approximately £157.89, giving a profit of approximately £57.89.

However, if none of the three horses wins, you lose your £100 total stake.

This illustrates an important feature of dutching: you can balance the returns across your chosen selections without necessarily covering every possible outcome.

Free Bet Dutching

Free Bet Dutching allows you to distribute promotional free bets across multiple selections.

This can be useful when a bookmaker provides free-bet credit that you want to divide between different outcomes.

The calculation differs from Standard Dutching because the promotional stake may not be returned when a free bet wins.

Step 1: Select Free Bet Dutching

Choose the Free Bet Dutching tab.

Check the bookmaker’s promotional conditions before proceeding, particularly whether the free-bet stake is returned.

Step 2: Enter the Free Bet Amount

Enter the total value of the free bet you want to distribute.

For example, you might have a £20 free bet that can be divided between several selections, subject to the bookmaker’s terms.

Step 3: Enter the Betting Odds

Enter the decimal odds for the selections you want to back.

The calculator uses these odds and the applicable free-bet conditions to determine the stake allocation.

Step 4: Examine the Calculated Returns

The calculator calculates how to distribute the free-bet amount between your selections.

For stake-not-returned free bets, the calculation is based on the winnings excluding the promotional stake.

This is an important distinction because the optimal allocation of a free bet may differ from the allocation of an equivalent amount of your own money.

The results allow you to compare the potential returns from your chosen selections.

Understanding Dutching Odds

Dutching works by combining the implied probabilities of several selections.

For decimal odds, the implied probability is calculated as:

Implied Probability = 1 ÷ Decimal Odds

For example:

Decimal OddsImplied Probability
2.0050.00%
4.0025.00%
5.0020.00%

The combined implied probability helps determine whether your selected outcomes can produce an equalised profit.

When the combined implied probability is below 100%, standard dutching can produce a profit if one of your chosen selections wins, assuming all bets are accepted at the entered odds.

When the combined implied probability exceeds 100%, equalising the returns produces a loss even if one of your selections wins.

Important Points

  • Enter all betting odds in decimal format.
  • Make sure your selections belong to the same event and that their settlement conditions are understood.
  • Check the total amount being staked before placing your bets.
  • Remember that dutching several selections does not guarantee a profit if other outcomes remain possible.
  • Check that the available betting odds have not changed before placing your bets.
  • For free bets, confirm whether the promotional stake is returned and whether the bookmaker permits the free bet to be divided.
  • Consider any bookmaker restrictions, including minimum stakes, maximum winnings and promotional conditions.

Why Use a Dutching Calculator?

Calculating the correct stake for several selections can be complicated, particularly when each selection has different odds.

The Dutching Calculator performs these calculations automatically, allowing you to examine the potential returns before placing your bets.

It can also help you compare different combinations of selections and understand how changes in the betting odds affect the required stakes.

Whether you are dutching several horses in a race, covering multiple football outcomes or distributing promotional free bets, the calculator provides a quick way to calculate your stakes and assess the potential financial results.
